Anthony Edwards Says It’s SGA’s Time for MVP

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was a beast last season, finishing second in MVP voting, but Anthony Edwards thinks second place isn’t good enough anymore. Edwards straight-up told ESPN he thinks SGA should take the crown this season.

"I don't know if they could give it to [Jokic] again," said Edwards, who had 20 points in the loss. "Yeah, I would say Shai. Yeah, he's looking like the MVP, man. He was incredible once again tonight."

And honestly, the numbers back him up. SGA is averaging 31.3 points, 6 dimes, and 5.5 boards a game while shooting a solid 35% from three. He’s locking it down on defense too, all while leading the Thunder to the top spot in the West. That’s MVP energy, no doubt.

Right now, the MVP convo feels like a Jokic vs. the world kind of thing. SGA is sitting second in the early polls, with Jokic holding the top spot and Giannis close behind. But with voter fatigue possibly hitting Jokic and the Nuggets’ second-round playoff exit last year, SGA might just slide into the top spot if he keeps balling out.

There’s still a ton of season left, but Edwards is making it clear who he’s rooting for. If SGA keeps this up, the MVP race could get real interesting real quick.

Ant vs SGA

Right now, if we’re talking MVP vibes, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) is ahead of Anthony Edwards in the race. He’s not just getting buckets; he’s also locking it down on defense and leading OKC to the top spot in the West. That’s big-time MVP energy, especially when you’re the best player on the No. 1 team.

Anthony Edwards is hooping too, don’t get it twisted. He’s been a straight-up star for Minnesota, showing he’s a legit leader and one of the most exciting players in the league. But when you stack their numbers and impact side by side, SGA edges him out right now. He’s not just putting up crazy stats; he’s doing it while elevating his team to another level. That kind of dominance is what separates MVPs from All-Stars.

Another thing working in SGA’s favor is how he’s controlling the narrative this season. Everyone expected the Nuggets, Celtics, or Bucks to dominate, but the Thunder being at the top of the West? That’s a plot twist, and SGA is the main character. Meanwhile, Edwards’ Wolves have been good, but they don’t have that same “wow, didn’t see that coming” factor, which matters when it comes to MVP voting.

That said, the season’s not even close to over, and things can flip fast. If Edwards goes on a tear and the Wolves climb higher in the standings, his case could get stronger. But for now, SGA’s consistency, leadership, and overall impact on both ends of the court give him the edge.

So yeah, right now, it’s Shai’s world, and he’s running the MVP convo. But with Ant and the Wolves not far behind, this race could get wild by the end of the season. Stay tuned, because both these guys are putting on a show.
