Lakers Weigh Roster Changes Without Trading LeBron and Davis
Over the past few years, some Los Angeles Lakers fans have advocated for trading LeBron James and Anthony Davis to rebuild the franchise. Critics argue that James is aging and overly influential within the organization, while Davis is seen as injury-prone and inconsistent. They highlight the Lakers' limited postseason success—reaching the second round of the playoffs only twice in five seasons with the duo—as evidence that this partnership lacks the potency needed to secure championships.
However, an alternate perspective suggests that the Lakers might only need a few roster upgrades and a lighter workload for James to become playoff contenders again. With a 14-12 record, the team recently defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, signaling potential for growth. Despite trade rumors circulating, reports from The Athletic indicate that James and Davis are not part of any discussions, reinforcing the franchise’s commitment to its star players.
From The Athletic:
"Two players who almost certainly won’t be traded, barring them asking out of Los Angeles, are Davis ($43.2 million) and James ($48.7 million)," wrote Buha.
"Despite the recent groundswell from certain media and fans to blow up the roster, the Lakers are not currently considering trading either superstar, according to team and league sources. They want to bolster their supporting cast and continue building around Davis and James."
Both James and Davis are still producing at a high level. James, though limited by age and a foot ailment, remains impactful, while Davis is enjoying perhaps the best season of his career. The Lakers are reportedly targeting specific roster enhancements, including a defensive center, a better point guard, and a 3-and-D wing. However, these improvements may prove challenging due to limited trade assets and the team's reluctance to part with young talent like Austin Reaves.
