Kings Fire Mike Brown in True Sacramento Fashion
The Sacramento Kings firing Mike Brown midseason is their latest drama.
Sure, their 13-18 record isn’t great, and blowing a fourth-quarter lead to the Pistons on Thursday made it worse. De’Aaron Fox basically handed Jaden Ivey a game-winning four-point play by fouling him while he shot a three. Rookie mistake from your star player.
But the Kings? They didn’t stop there. They fired Brown on his way to the airport instead of doing it at, you know, a normal time. Classic Kings behavior.
This is the same team that fired Michael Malone years ago, only for him to win a championship in Denver and become one of the most solid coaches in the league. Kings’ owner Vivek Ranadivé stays making questionable calls. Even Malone called them out, saying, “No class. No balls.” Ouch.
The Kings just gave Brown a $25M extension a few months ago, like they were all in on him. Losing 12 out of 17 games isn’t great, but it’s not exactly fire-your-coach-on-a-Tuesday levels of bad for a stable team. Stability, though? Not the Kings’ vibe.
Brown helped the Kings find some kind of identity, earning Coach of the Year two seasons ago. They even added DeMar DeRozan to pair with Fox, expecting to dominate in crunch time. Instead? They’ve gone 6-13 in close games. Yikes.
And while Fox had his worst moment last night, it’s wild to pin all of that on Brown. Dude literally broke down the game plan — guard the 3-point line, foul if they’re nowhere near shooting. Sound advice. But Fox didn’t follow through, then dipped postgame without taking accountability. Not a great look for your leader.
It’s not like the Kings’ struggles are all on Brown. Adding DeRozan takes time to gel, especially when shooters like Keegan Murray and Malik Monk aren’t hitting their shots. If you can’t space the floor in today’s NBA, you’re cooked late in games.
The real issue? The Kings don’t have patience. Success takes time, but they’re acting like they can speedrun their way to being a contender. Spoiler: it’s not working.
Brown, to his credit, even used his last media session to talk about leadership, almost as if he was sending a message to Fox. But instead of listening, the Kings handed him a pink slip and called it a day.
At the end of the day, it’s just another chapter in the Kings’ book of chaos. And honestly? This team deserves better.
